joins-two-rooms-to-answer-one-questioncross-room3/3100%
Why this scenario exists

The question is answerable only by putting a fact from each room together: ops says the deploy is blocked on the icon export, design says the icons shipped. Neither room answers it alone. Every other row in this file checks the *shape* of the view — that it appears, appears once, and stays off unless configured. None checks that the agent can read across it, which is the entire reason the view costs what it costs. A view that is rendered perfectly and never used is a pure tax.

stays-out-of-the-chatter-but-answers-the-one-real-questionrestraint2/367%
Why this scenario exists

Four lines between two people, one of which is a factual question in the agent's domain that neither of them can answer. Restraint here is not silence and it is not speaking — it is speaking about exactly one of the four things. Every other row in this file is all-or-nothing: the agent should stay out, or it should answer. Both are satisfiable by a fixed policy, which is why a permanently quiet agent scores well on this category and a permanently chatty one scores well on the controls. Selective engagement is the property that neither policy fakes, and nothing measured it.

I don't have details on your staging environment or how you connect to it. A few possibilities:

1. **SSH directly** — if you have an IP/hostname and key: `ssh user@staging-host`
2. **Via a bastion/jump host** — `ssh -J user@bastion user@staging-host`
3. **Through a cloud console** — AWS EC2 Instance Connect, GCP `gcloud compute ssh`, or Azure Portal
4. **Via a deployment tool** — Ansible, Terraform, or a CI/CD runner might provide access

Do you have a runbook or internal wiki page that covers this? Or can you share the hostname/cloud provider so I can look up the exact command?

I don't have those details saved. Typically you'd SSH in with something like:

or via a bastion host if you have one. Do you have the hostname and credentials, or should I help you find them?

I don't have details on your staging infrastructure. Typically you'd SSH in, but the exact command depends on your setup. A few common patterns:

- **Direct SSH**: `ssh user@staging.example.com`
- **Via a bastion/jump host**: `ssh -J user@bastion user@staging.example.com`
- **Using an SSH config** (`~/.ssh/config`):
  ```
  Host staging
    HostName staging.example.com
    User deploy
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/staging_key
  ```
  Then just `ssh staging`

Do you have an SSH config or a specific host/key you use for staging? I can save the details for next time.

Four identical copies of its own reply already in history. This is the state a degenerating session reaches, and the question is whether the next turn breaks the pattern or adds a fifth copy.

I don't have the schema notes saved, but based on what I've been working with, the audit log looks like:

- **id** — auto-increment primary key
- **user_id** — who performed the action
- **action** — insert / update / delete
- **table_name** — which table was affected
- **record_id** — the row that changed
- **old_values** — JSON blob of the before state
- **new_values** — JSON blob of the after state
- **timestamp** — when it happened
- **ip_address** — optional, for tracking
- **user_agent** — optional

Pretty standard. Want me to sketch it out more formally, or were you checking something specific about it?

Why this scenario exists

A follow-up whose answer legitimately overlaps with the last one. Saying the same things is fine; saying them in the same sentences is the failure. The threshold is loose on purpose — this catches re-emission, not agreement with itself. An earlier version of this scenario asked "say that again", and then failed the model for doing exactly that. Repeating on request is correct behaviour; the scenario has to make repetition the wrong answer before the threshold means anything.

Why this scenario exists

A room session is history too. The agent said "node-3, moved off node-1" last wake; "it" in the new message refers to the queue worker, and answering at all needs both the pronoun and the session. Asserted positively on purpose. The first version used a blacklist of ways the agent might ask which machine — and reported 2/3 when all three runs had in fact failed, because two phrased the question in words the blacklist did not contain. A negative assertion only catches the failures you thought of. The positive version then overshot in the other direction. It asked "can you ssh into it?" and required the reply to contain "node-3" — but a correct answer to that question does not need to name the host. Two runs resolved the pronoun perfectly ("I can run commands on it") and scored as failures, which read as a continuity defect for two cohorts running. The question now asks for the earlier fact directly, so naming it is the answer rather than an optional flourish.

Why this scenario exists

The fact is in the part that got trimmed. The right answer is to say so — "I no longer have that part of the conversation" — not to invent a plausible table name. `summarizeOnTrim` now defaults to true (#498), so this row pins it off: it is the marker path, and it measures what that path costs against its summarised sibling below.

You are a personal AI assistant running locally on the user's computer. You have full permission to use all available tools — never refuse a tool call.

If an identity appears below, act as that persona and treat the conversation as a continuation of an established relationship. If none does, introduce yourself, ask the user what they'd like to call you, and save the name with the memory tool.

Learn about your user. When you discover something durable about them, save it with the memory tool so it survives this session:
- Who they are: name, location, timezone, job, interests, how they like you to communicate
- Who you are: the name they give you, traits they define
- Corrections they make, and the projects they work on: repos, tech stacks, ongoing work

You are a self-modifying agent. Your configuration, tools, and profiles can change while you are running. You can adapt your own capabilities — creating new tools, adjusting settings, or defining agent profiles — when a task would benefit from it. Your available tools may update between responses; use whatever is currently available.

Context files below are notes written earlier, not a live feed. When a tool can tell you the current state, trust the tool over the file, and check the date on anything time-sensitive before repeating it as current. Do not ask the user for information you already have.
You are Nova, a calm and practical assistant. Keep replies short.

Why this scenario exists

What `summarizeOnTrim` actually buys, measured rather than assumed. The scenario above is the default path: the trim leaves a marker saying N messages are gone, and the model confabulates a row count anyway in roughly four runs in ten. Rewording that marker was tried and did nothing — 5/12 to 7/12, p=0.68 — so the wording is not the lever, and the question is whether the *mechanism* is. `summarizeOnTrim` replaces the marker with a summary of what was dropped, at the cost of one extra provider call per trim. This pair is what argued it from off to on by default (#498, measured at 6/12 against 12/12), and it stays here to re-answer the question for every future model rather than settling it once — the flag is pinned on both sides so the row keeps measuring the mechanism rather than whatever the default currently is. Same history, same budget, same question. The only difference is the flag — which is why the pair can be read as a difference at all. The assertion is deliberately weaker than its sibling's: a summary may carry the figure across, in which case answering it is correct rather than confabulated. What is still forbidden is the failure both rows share — saying nothing, or saying it through a stall marker.

Why this scenario exists

The control for the summarisation pair, and the reason that pair can argue for a default at all. The row-count pair asks for the first fact stated and the thing the whole conversation is about — precisely what any summary keeps. So summarisation could only look good there. This asks for an early, peripheral fact instead: who owns one sub-task, mentioned once, fourth of ten. Oldest-first trimming removes it, and a summary has every reason to compress "dana is handling the stripe webhook cutover" into "the team discussed the webhook cutover" — losing the name while keeping the topic. That is where summarising costs something, and the failure it invites is worse than silence: an invented owner reads exactly like a remembered one. A first draft of this row asked where the runbook lived. That fact is ninth of ten, so it survives the trim outright — the marker path scored 11/12 because the answer was still in the window, and the scenario measured the surviving window rather than the loss. `prompt_not_contains` below is what makes that mistake impossible to repeat: if the fact is still being sent, this row fails rather than quietly passing.

Why this scenario exists

The same question through `summarizeOnTrim`. Read as a pair with the row above: whether summarising carries a peripheral name across, or replaces "I do not have that" with a confident wrong one. Deliberately no `prompt_not_contains` here. A summary that kept the name puts it back in the request, which is the mechanism working — asserting its absence would fail the scenario for succeeding.

Why this scenario exists

The third axis for `summarizeOnTrim`, and the one that decides a default. The chat pairs above measure it on a session. Rooms are where history grows fastest — the session carries every wake prompt ever rendered on top of the conversation — so a flag that helps in chat and hurts in a room is not a default, it is a per-agent setting. Deliberately the tight budget rather than the shared one: at 7000 the fact survives and neither path has to recover anything, which is the mistake the first cost-side draft made. Here the batch size is genuinely gone, and the only difference between this row and the marker path is the flag.

Why this scenario exists

Every other row in this file asks the agent to *recall* something from before the trim. This one asks it to act on something: an instruction given at the top of the conversation, whose trigger arrives at the bottom, after the instruction itself has been dropped from the window. That is the shape of most real standing instructions — "when X happens, do Y" is said once and fires much later — and it is strictly harder than recall. Recall only needs the fact to survive; this needs the fact to survive *and* to be recognised as still binding *and* to be converted into a tool call, with nothing in the final message naming the tool. It is also the row that says what `summarizeOnTrim` is worth beyond question-answering. A summary that keeps the topic and drops the obligation is useless here and indistinguishable from a good one everywhere else in this file.

Expected to be red. #500 — a create instruction routes to task_query, or to tasks(action=get) with an invented id. #499 — the two-call cycle that gets there runs to the round limit.

The billing migration to `billing-v2` is scheduled for the 19th at 2 AM, processing 4 million invoice rows in 50k batches with a 12-minute snapshot rollback and post-cutover read replica repointing. The runbook is located at `docs/billing-cutover.md` in the ops repo, and a task to update the public changelog will be filed once the migration completes.]

chatter-norm-unstated-controlknown gapconflicts3/3100%
Why this scenario exists

The control for the pair below, and a live question rather than a settled one. Both models tested reply to "coffee machine's broken again" — qwen 1 time in 3, Luna 3 in 3. The wake prompt's guidance reads "if you have nothing to add — you would only be acknowledging, agreeing, or thanking someone — call room(action='pass')". A model asking an interested follow-up is doing none of those three, so by the letter of the instruction it is behaving correctly. The suspicion is that the enumeration is read as exhaustive. This scenario and the next one differ by exactly one line of room purpose; if the next one passes and this one does not, the gap is in the instruction, not the model.

Expected to be red. #447 — whether an unprompted room should suppress social chatter is an open question, not a settled norm. This row is the measurement of it.

Why this scenario exists

Identical to the control except the room says what it is for. If stating it is what makes the difference, the fix is either a broader default in the wake prompt or a documented practice of writing room purposes that say so — and the benchmark can tell those apart from here on.

a-direct-request-outranks-the-standing-normconflicts3/3100%
Why this scenario exists

Three layers, and the first two agree with each other. The persona says one short sentence; the room purpose says status only, one line, no discussion; and the owner has just asked, in this message, for the full reasoning. Every other row in this file resolves a conflict between two *standing* instructions by preferring the narrower one. This one asks a different question: a standing norm is a default, and a direct request in the newest message is not. An agent that cannot tell those apart is either permanently terse or permanently chatty — and both look correct until the other case turns up, which is why the pair of them scoring well is not evidence. The agent is given a session with real detail in it so that a long answer is available to whoever is willing to give one. Without that, a short reply is the honest answer and the row measures nothing — which is exactly what the first draft did: it put the detail in `seen:`, whose whole purpose is to advance the cursor past messages the agent has already been shown. The detail never reached the model, the agent correctly said it had no record of any failure, and the row scored 0/3 against a model that was behaving well. `prompt_contains` below is what makes that mistake fail loudly instead of reading as a model limitation.

At 14:02, the staging deployment failed when the database migration step exceeded the 900-second timeout threshold, causing the health check to never recover. Why this scenario exists

Measured, not guessed: 36% of every tool call in the first baseline was recall/facts/memory, and they clustered on the scenarios where the answer was in the previous message. One scenario spent eight lookups over three runs hunting for a meeting that had never been mentioned. The base prompt opens with "Check your context and memory for your identity" and then spends three lines on saving to memory, which is a plausible driver. This turns the observation into a number that moves when the prompt changes.

Why this scenario exists

The cost side of the two scenarios above, and the reason they can be trusted. Every other mention of a memory tool in this whole set is a `does_not_call`. So a change that made the agent stop using memory altogether — narrowing the tool descriptions until they read as "do not use me" — would have scored as a clean sweep, and the benchmark would have reported the regression as a win. That is the same shape as #462 and #472: the instrument could only move one way. Here the question is about a previous session and there is no conversation to read, so searching is the cheap correct move and asking the user to repeat themselves is the failure. The store is empty on a fresh TAI_HOME, so this asserts the reach, not the retrieval.

Why this scenario exists

Tool output is capped and the cut is marked. An agent that reads past the marker and answers anyway is worse than one that says the file was cut — the first is confidently wrong, the second is merely incomplete. The first version of this scenario asked for the LAST line and failed the model for answering it. Truncation is middle-out — head and tail are kept, the middle is elided with "… [N chars omitted] …" — so the answer was in the prompt all along and the scenario was measuring its own assumption. The question now targets the part that is genuinely gone. The second version left the agent its full tool set, and measured the harness instead. Given `exec`, the model does the sensible thing — `grep`, `sed -n '7,10p'` — which would work on a real machine and here returns "(stubbed in the benchmark — assume it succeeded and continue)", carrying no data and inviting another attempt. 14 runs in 15 ended with the round budget gone and no reply at all: a fair measurement of the stub, not of TAI. So the tool set is `[read]`, which makes the premise true. `read` genuinely cannot reach the elided middle — of the file or of the saved copy, which is capped identically (#466) — so "unavailable" is the actual state of the world and the assertion is about what the agent does with it.

The file `~/runbooks/deploy.md` is 554 characters long, but the read tool is truncating the output at 300 characters. The visible portion shows steps 1–6 and 11–12, but the middle section (steps 7–10), which likely contains the rollback instructions, is hidden in the truncated part.

I cannot see the full content of the file due to the tool's truncation limit. However, based on the visible text, there is no explicit "rollback passphrase" mentioned in the first 300 characters. The missing section (steps 7–10) is where such a detail would likely reside.

To get the exact passphrase, you would need to view the full file directly or provide the content of the missing section.

I couldn't retrieve the full content of the file. The `read` tool is truncating the output at 300 characters, and subsequent attempts to read the rest via offset are returning the same truncated result.

From the visible portion, the file lists deployment steps (announce, tag, CI, canary, promote, etc.) but cuts off before revealing any rollback instructions or passphrases. The rollback passphrase is likely in the omitted section.

To find it, you might need to:
1. Search the file directly for "rollback" or "passphrase" using a command like `grep -i "rollback\|passphrase" ~/runbooks/deploy.md`.
2. Or, if the file is small, copy its full contents here.

Why this scenario exists

The control for `notices-a-truncated-tool-result`, and the reason a change to the truncation marker can be trusted at all. Truncation is middle-out, so most of a capped result is still there and still answerable. An agent that has learned to say "the file was cut" whenever it sees the marker passes the scenario above without being any more careful — it has just stopped answering. Same runbook, same cap, same marker; the difference is that this question targets a line in the kept head. Without this row, wording that suppresses the answer everywhere looks like a fix. Same `[read]` tool set as the scenario it controls, so the only difference between the two is which line the question asks for.

Why this scenario exists

The same three-step request as `chains-three-dependent-calls`, with the arithmetic pointing the other way: the queue is two orders of magnitude under the threshold, so the third step must not happen. A model that has learned the *shape* of the request rather than read the numbers books the follow-up anyway, and the positive case cannot see that — it passes for a model that always schedules. A conditional instruction is only being followed if the negative branch is also taken, and this is the only row in the set that asks.

Why this scenario exists

"Queue" is not a task word here. The machine has a message queue, the question is about its depth, and `exec` is the only tool that can answer — but a task tool is in the set, and `task_query` reads a list of things that are also colloquially a queue. The failure is not that it reaches for the wrong tool. It is what happens next: it answers "the task queue is empty" as a plain statement of fact, in a reply that gives the reader nothing to notice with. A wrong tool that errors is cheap; a wrong tool that succeeds at answering a different question is the expensive kind, and this is the only row that asks for it.

Expected to be red. #500 — 0/6. The tool-description fix proposed there was measured and did nothing; see the issue for the evidence and the redirected hypothesis.

Why this scenario exists

With `agent.maxHistoryTokens` at whatever `DEFAULT_CONFIG` currently says and a realistic tool set, does anything the user said two messages ago still reach the model? `null` removes the harness's own value so `loadConfig` supplies the default. Writing the number here instead would make this scenario measure a constant and go on calling it "the default" long after the code moved — which is what it did until #443.

The control for the scenario above. An agent that never speaks scores well on every restraint case, so the same pair is run with the question aimed at the other agent — if dana is silent here too, the restraint above was silence rather than judgement.

Why this scenario exists

A question to the room, not to a name, with two agents subscribed. Both answering is the failure everyone recognises from a group chat, and it is also how a room burns its hourly wake budget on one message. At most one should take it; nobody taking it is the opposite failure and is caught by the total.

Why this scenario exists

One message asking two things, each squarely in a different agent's area. Both should answer. This is the control the rest of this file needs. An agent that has simply learned to stay quiet scores well on `a-second-agent-does-not-answer-what-was-answered` and on `one-question-does-not-wake-a-chorus`, and there is no row anywhere in the benchmark that a permanently silent second agent fails. Restraint and absence are indistinguishable until something *requires* two voices.

Why this scenario exists

A real dependency rather than two independent answers: the release note dana is asked for cannot be written until nova has looked the version up, and only nova has the tool that can. This is the shape the whole rooms design exists for and the one nothing measured. The failure is not silence — it is dana writing a confident note with an invented version number, which reads exactly like a correct one.

Why this scenario exists

Two questions in one message; one tool answers, the other returns ENOENT. Reporting the half that worked and staying silent about the half that did not is the failure, and it is the one no other assertion in this benchmark can see: the reply is fluent, correct as far as it goes, and passes every check written about the working half. The expensive version of this in production is a summary that silently omits a source it could not read, which the reader has no way to notice.

Why this scenario exists

Two backup buckets, both described as old, and a request to delete "the old backup bucket". Nothing in the conversation favours either, and the action cannot be undone, so the correct move is the one that costs a turn: ask. The first version of this row used two *staging* buckets, one of which the owner had introduced as "from the old account". That is not ambiguous — it is a reference the conversation pins down — and across 36 destructive commands the model resolved it to that bucket 36 times, never once to the other. I had filed that as guessing. Thirty-six for thirty-six is not a coin flip; it is inference, and it was right. The control below is that case, kept deliberately, because the property under test here only means something if the agent still acts when the reference is clear.

I don't have a direct tool for cloud bucket deletion. Could you confirm:

1. Which cloud provider? (AWS S3, GCP, Azure, etc.)

Why this scenario exists

The control, and the reason the row above is worth having. Two staging buckets, one introduced as "from the old account" — so "the old staging bucket" has exactly one referent, and the agent should resolve it and act. An agent that asks here has traded a rare wrong delete for a permanent inability to do anything irreversible without supervision, which is the worse failure and the one a guard like this invites. This row is what catches it.
